The
International Olympic Committee (IOC) has proposed that Olympic golf
and rugby
be added to the current list of 26 core sports for the 2016 Olympic
program. The two sports beat out baseball, karate, roller sports,
softball and squash. IOC President Jacques Rogge said that after
careful evaluation "in a transparent and fair process," the decision, taken by secret ballot, came down to "which two would add the most value". Rogge also noted that golf and rugby not only scored highly on all the key criteria, but they also "have global appeal, a geographically diverse line-up of top iconic athletes and an ethic that stresses fair play".
The final decision concerning inclusion will be made in early October
during the Olympic Congress in Copenhagen. This would be the first time in over a century that golf has been an Olympic sport. Golf was in the Olympic Games twice, first in the1900 Paris Olympics and again in the 1904 St. Louis Olympics. Golf was then dropped from the Olympic list due to lack of interest. | ||||||||||||
